About Us

Our Story

Founded in 2016 by director, Stacey Lewis, SL Recycling’s story began with a 1-acre metal recycling facility based in the valley of South Wales. Once established as a scrap merchant, they soon began to approach the manufacturer sector and quickly discovered a gap in the market; these businesses wanted a one-stop shop, one reliable company that could provide a Total Waste Management solution for all their waste streams. Customers wanted one point of contact, clear paper trail, a high standard of service, total compliance, landfill diversion and most importantly, a competitive price in line with the current markets – but no one could offer it all.

SL Recycling has invested heavily to provide the full range of services without the use of third parties and added margins.

SL Recycling is now one of the largest independent metal recyclers in South Wales. We offer specialist metal & waste recycling services, designed to meet the ever-changing needs of all our customers and suppliers. We are proud to bring you our £10 million state-of-the-art waste processing facility that puts South Wales at the forefront of the recycling industry.

We process over 1500 tonnes of metal, 300 tonnes of wood, 100 tonnes of cardboard and 600 tonnes of commercial industrial waste per week!

From our humble beginnings we had aspirational views of future expansion and progression to broaden our offering while maintaining our values. We now proudly offer the total package of waste management through in-house processing, skip hire, recycling, consultancy and much more.

Our growth is testament to our dedication to recycling and making waste matter. We continually strive towards zero-waste-to-landfill, exploring Best Alternative Techniques and maximizing recycling solutions. We currently recycle 92% of all the materials we handle, focusing on diverting from landfill.

We are dedicated to providing a flexible, reliable and cost-effective metal & waste management service with a personal touch. Combing expert industry knowledge with highly personal customer service, we put clients at the forefront of our services. We offer experienced account managers, specialist consultancy and flexible support to ensure our clients are always taken care of.

We believe that by acting responsibly we will enhance our financial performance and create sustainable value for our shareholders.

Environment

SL Recycling’s environmental commitment

SL Recycling is committed to minimising environmental impact and preventing pollution in relation to our activities, products and services. This is achieved through adherence to the Waste Hierarchy and application of Best Available Techniques (BAT) for infrastructure, technology and collection services.

SL Recycling is committed to the effective operation and continual improvement of the environmental management system within the organisation. These commitments provide a framework from which departmental, functional and individual objectives are set and reviewed.  In order to achieve these objectives, we are committed to ensuring that adequate resources are made available and that all individuals are made aware of their roles and responsibilities, accountabilities and authorities.

Our experienced Account Managers are skilled in environmental legislation and compliance and offer on-going consultancy as part of regular site audits. Operating to ISO 9001 and 14001 standards, we ensure we meet Duty of Care requirements for our clients.

Improving recycling standards

Compliance is crucial to SL Recycling and the quality services we provide.

Current legislation, which was introduced in January 2015 in England and Wales, found within the Waste Framework Directive, makes it a legal requirement for paper, plastic, metals and glass to be collected separately unless it is not technically, environmentally or economically practicable (TEEP) to do so.

We view this legislation in a positive light as it underpins our drive for waste producers and collectors to work positively together to ensure quality material is collected for recycling.

Waste hierarchy

How SL Recycling treats waste.

The waste hierarchy is the foundation for the way waste should be treated. Set up through the European Union framework, it provides a guide on SL Recycling’s approach to managing waste. Under the revised Waste Framework Directive, all businesses and public bodies have to demonstrate how they have considered the waste hierarchy when disposing of waste.

Identifying ways to reduce waste initially, the ‘prevention’ step, offers the most wide-reaching benefits in terms of resource efficiency, sustainability and cost saving. There is also great potential in re-using and recycling materials, which can provide resources to the manufacturing sector and have a reduced overall environmental impact due to less water and energy usage.

A declaration is included on waste transfer or hazardous waste consignment notes to demonstrate the waste hierarchy has been followed when choosing specific waste options. This includes showing how ‘minimization’, ‘recycling’ or ‘recovery’ was considered prior to final disposal, often aided by SL Recycling waste management and consultancy.
